El cineasta mexicano Alejandro González Iñárritu triunfa en la 87 edición de los Óscar con Birdman al conseguir cuatro estatuillas: película, director, guión original y fotografía para Emmanuel Lubezki, que repite tras conseguirlo el año pasado con Gravity. También obtiene cuatro galardones El Gran Hotel Budapest, en las categorías técnicas de mejor banda sonora a cargo de Alexandre Desplat, así como mejor vestuario, maquillaje y peluquería y diseño de producción. Whiplash se lleva tres Oscar a mejor actor secundario (J.K. Simmons), edición y mezcla de sonido; mientras que Boyhood, que era a priori una de las favoritas, se tiene que conformar con un premio a la mejor actriz secundaria para Patricia Arquette. En cuanto a lo premios de interpretación los galardonados son Julianne Moore por Siempre Alice y Eddie Redmayne por La teoría del todo.
